Taxpayers who claimed the additional standard deduction for the blind on their Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR tax return within the last two tax years should have received IRS Letter 9000 EN-SP, Alternative Media Preference Election, between September 15 and October 1, 2021.

This letter states that beginning January 31, 2022, visually impaired taxpayers may elect to receive future correspondence from the IRS in Braille, large print, audio or electronic formats by using the new Form 9000, Alternative Media Preference. Even taxpayers who did not receive Letter 9000 are eligible to elect to receive IRS correspondence from the IRS in alternative media formats.

If you don’t want to receive future correspondence in one of these formats, then you don’t need to respond to this notice. Only respond if you want future correspondence in Braille, large print, audio, or electronic formats.

What do you need to do to request an alternative media format preference?

You can do one of the following:

  • Complete Form 9000, Alternative Media Preference, available at www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/accessible-irs-tax-products (available after Jan. 2022) and include it with your tax return or mail it by itself to: Department of the Treasury
    Internal Revenue Service
    Kansas City, MO 64999-0002
  • Contact IRS customer service telephone number at 800-829-1040.

For additional help available for visually impaired and other taxpayers with disabilities, see TAS Tax Tip: Additional help is now available for visually impaired and other taxpayers with disabilities.
