National Taxpayer Advocate Testifies Before the Ways and Means Committee Oversight Subcommittee

On Tuesday, February 8, National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins testified in front of the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Oversight Subcommittee about various challenges taxpayers face with the IRS.

During the hearing, Collins stated the number one priority of the IRS is to clean up the backlog of unprocessed tax returns.

“When I see the backlog, I don’t see piles of papers but instead I see people, families and businesses that need their returns processed,” Collins advocated.

She also discussed IRS staffing, the vital need to modernize the IRS Information Technology (IT) systems, and offered her solutions for removing barriers for taxpayers and improving quality of service.
